FUKUOKA CITY MUSEUM OF LITERATURE @@@ADDRESS: 1-15-30, Chuo-ku, Tenjin, Fukuoka The Fukuoka City Museum of Literature promotes literature by holding planned exhibitions and literary courses as a means to support life long literary learning activities for residents of the City of Fukuoka. The building, designed by renowned architect Kingo Tatsuno and Yasu Kataoka and completed in February 1909, was used as the Kyushu branch office of Nippon Life Insurance Company. Features of the structure such as its dome, small towers, dormer windows, copper plated roof and its exterior made of red brick and white granite, applied English style architecture used at the end of the 19th Century. The structure was designated as a Precious Cultural Asset by the Japanese government in March 1969 at which time ownership was transferred to the City of Fukuoka. After being used as a historical museum, it was renamed the Red Brick Cultural Museum in 1994. In 2002, the Fukuoka City Museum of Literature was inaugurated where today it collects and provides much material and information on literature. |
